DISCOVER THE FOUNDATIONS OF A CONVICT HUT – AND
EXPLORE ONE OF COLONIAL AUSTRALIA’S EARLIEST BUILDINGS,
FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT

When you visit the Philip Ruddock V Heritage Archaeology Display Centre, you’ll be stepping back in time as you witness some of the best-preserved remains of European settlement in Australia.

This treasure trove of historical artefacts includes evidence of:

  • A convict hut
  • Occupation by a wheelwright (wheel craftsman)
  • The cellar of the Wheatsheaf Hotel (c1801), one of the earliest remnants of a hotel building in Australia
  • A colonial period cottage, complete with well.

First discovered in 2005 during preliminary earthworks for the construction of Crown Group’s V residential development, the number of findings and their quality surprised even the most experienced archaeologists, including Dr Edward Higginbotham who led the team that eventually unearthed this priceless collection.

The Crown Group’s V Residential Development has been built directly above the Philip Ruddock V Heritage Archaeology Display Centre and features a multi-purpose residential tower with restaurants, apartments, and a five star hotel.

It is truly a powerful moment to stand in the ultra-modern V Residential Development knowing you’re also standing on a site of immense historical significance that just over 200 years ago witnessed the birth of a new era in Australian history.

The Philip Ruddock V Heritage Archaeology Display Centre offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the site’s history and get a glimpse into early settlement life.

The Crown Group’s V Residential Development welcomes the public to visit these important historical displays during open times or by appointment. Entry is free. The Philip Ruddock V Heritage Archaeology Display Centre can also cater for functions and special occasions.

Archaeologists and Australian history specialists, including Dr. Edward Higginbotham can be engaged on a professional level for those seeking a more in-depth tour of the site. Please fill in the enquiry form below for further information.
